Bunker Etiquette

Wipe Your Feet!

By Larry Gilhuly, director, Northwest Region

In recent years, a more common occurrence viewed on putting greens are the remnants of sand left from players feet as they exit a bunker and  walk onto the greens.  Besides the visual nuisance, the real problem is not only can the sand impact ball roll, but also it can potentially damage to the putting green mowers if it is not brushed into the surface. A dull mower and the resulting poor quality cut results in a reduction in putting quality and a plant that is more subject to disease. The simple answer is to simply remember to give each foot a solid smack with your golf club prior to walking onto the green. Take a moment to help out the golf course maintenance crew; next time you exit a bunker, make sure to wipe your feet.
