Winter is Here
Although we do not expect the same severe winter conditions as we dealt with last year, the first blast of snow and cold temperatures have arrived. The 14 day forecast is calling for temperatures ranging from -2 to 4 degrees Celsius.
We are clearing the snow and ice off the low areas on a few selective greens to monitor the thaw / freeze effect. At this time we expect the moisture from any thawing will penetrate through the soil profile and not accumulate in the low areas. If the ground frost becomes deeper, the snow melt will run across the surface to the low areas and collars where we will be able to push the excess water off the greens and avoid ice accumulation.
If the weather continues to be very cold into January we will change our tactic and attempt to soften the snow on the greens surfaces with heat and remove the snow and ice to avoid prolonged ice cover.
